Message from International President Sid Scruggs to Lion Leaders

December 2010

Dear Lion MICHAEL,

At this time of year Lions around the world are preparing to celebrate a variety of holidays.  These observances are as diverse as Lions themselves but like Lions, their holiday spirit has much in common.  It is a spirit of love and joy.

For Lions, the opportunities for service are year-round, but somehow these opportunities come into sharper focus during this season of the year. As we celebrate with family and friends we need to be reminded of our responsibility to those less fortunate and be willing to share the joys of the holidays with others.  We need to greet the New Year with enthusiasm and optimism to make our beacon of hope shine brighter.

Please refer to the information in this message on the Global Service Action Campaigns and the new Light Keeper Award for ways to keep the Lions beacon shining.

Meanwhile, I wish you and your family joy and peace in this holiday season and hope that, in the coming year, you and your family will continue to enjoy the satisfaction that comes from making a difference in the lives of those in need.

Best wishes,

Sid L. Scruggs III
International President

Global Service Action Campaigns

Relieving the Hunger

Hunger is a year round issue. In December and January Lions around the world will shine a spotlight on the plight of those who do not have enough to eat. During this time your club can leverage this increased awareness by enlisting other organizations and the general public to make Relieving the Hunger a success in your community.

For ideas, read "Relieving the Hunger" Project Ideas. Be sure to publicize your success in your community and to publicly acknowledge and thank your club's partners. Reporting your Global Service Action Campaign projects using the online Service Activities Report makes clubs eligible for the Beacon Awards.

Beacon of Hope Highlights

Sharing the Vision

More than 500 Lions Clubs in 60 countries have participated in 850 Sharing the Vision projects for a total of 71,917 hours.  Reporting clubs have provided vision screening services to nearly 350,000 people and have collected over 250,000 eyeglasses during the month of October.  As part of the Sharing the Vision campaign, Lions of MD 324 D6 in Bangalore, India began a major vision screening initiative focused on training enough Lions to screen a million children.

Set Your Sights High

The lamp was lit in Sydney last July.  Now, almost halfway through the year, the beacon of Lions Clubs International is shining even more brightly.  Worldwide membership has increased  and now stands at 1,346,725 Lion members-- an increase of nearly 7,000 since July 2010.

Women now make up a larger part of the Lions family than ever before.  Today there are more than 300,000 women Lions around the globe. In addition to the growth in Lions members, there is an increase in the number of Leos. This year alone, more than 100 new Leo Clubs have been established.

Clearly, "success through service" is succeeding as Lions Clubs International extends its reach into unserved communities and increases its capacity to provide more and better service to those in need.
