Message from International President Sid Scruggs to Lion
Leaders
|
October
2010
|
|
|
|
Dear Lion MICHAEL,

It was a great pleasure to be with Kunio Hiramatsu, the mayor of
Osaka and a Lion, for World
Sight Day.
It was the 12th World Sight Day in which Lions have played a leading
role. In Osaka I was proud to help the mayor dedicate a new feature
of the city zoo for the visually impaired and to participate in
outreach activities at the Nippon Lighthouse for the Blind.
The second Global Service Action Campaign was scheduled to support
Lions participation in World Sight Day, but I have asked Lions around
the world to focus on sight -- one of our oldest and most important
service areas - for the entire month of October. If your club
or district has not yet participated there is still time to collect
eyeglasses, organize a vision screening or help visually impaired
individuals participate in community activities. Read 20
Ideas for Vision Service Projects for more ideas.
October has always been an active month for Lions Clubs
International. It is traditionally the month in which we focus
on membership
growth, and
it is appropriate that we do so this month as well. In fact, it
goes hand-in-hand with our October service initiative. A club
program of service activities that are enjoyable, visible and effective,
is the most potent membership growth tool a Lions Club can
have. The formula is pretty simple: more and better
service activities equal more and more satisfied Lions who are proud
to be a Lion.
The next opportunity for our clubs to participate in a highly visible
and highly effective worldwide service project will come in
December. I urge you to learn all you can about the third
Global Service Action Campaign: Relieving the
Hunger. Please help meet that most fundamental human need
and keep our Beacon of Hope burning bright for all to see!
Thank you for all you do.
Best wishes,
Sid L. Scruggs III
International President

Relieving the Hunger
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of
the United Nations as many as a billion in the world, almost
one-sixth of the world's population, do not have enough to eat.
The problem is not confined to any one nation or continent. No
place is exempt. Even if they are not visible, there are hungry
people in your own community. Lions Clubs can do something to
help. In fact, there are many things a Lions Club can do:
- Sponsor a community
food drive to replenish a local food pantry.
- Volunteer to deliver
prepared meals to elderly citizens.
- Prepare and deliver
food baskets to families in need.
- Serve meals at a soup
kitchen or homeless shelter.
- Help plant a community
garden.
I am asking all Lions Clubs around the globe to shine a
light on the worldwide problem of hunger and throughout December and
January to be a Beacon of Hope for all who do not have adequate
access to healthy food. Read the Relieving the
Hunger Web page for more information about how your club or
district can take part in this vital global initiative.
Be sure your club secretary uses the newly redesigned Service
Activities Report to report your club's service activities,
especially projects related to the service action campaigns.
Clubs that submit projects related to the Global Service Action
Campaigns through the online Service Activities Report are
automatically nominated for the Beacon
Awards.

Commit to Service
Thank you to the
thousands of Lions from all parts of the world who have already
signed the Service Commitment Pledge on the Lions Clubs International
Web site! Please encourage all Lions to answer my call to reflect on
all we have accomplished and commit ourselves to doing even more
service to help meet the increasing needs in our communities by signing
the pledge. The deadline to sign the pledge online is October 30.
