2011-2012Phil Shober![]() DG Phil Shober and his wife Lion Candy Notes from
DG Phil
Itʼs hard to believe it's been one month since Lion Candy and I have returned from the international convention in Seattle. We got off to a fast start in July with several club visits, Eye Glass Night at the Reading Phillies and an enjoyable evening at Shady Maple greeting the exchange students from Japan. PDG Rich Taylor and his committee are doing a fabulous job with the youth exchange program. District 14 P is the only District in Pennsylvania with a Youth Exchange program. In 2012 it will be our turn to send a group of young adults to Japan. PDG Rich will be looking for students for next year and adults to act as chaperones. It's not too early to be thinking about next year, so if you or know s ome o n e i n t e r e s t e d please contact PDG Rich. The first State Council meeting was held in Harrisburg on the first weekend in August. Both Lion Candy and I think the most enjoyable part of these meetings is the friendships we are making with our fellow Lions from across the state of Pennsylvania. The message I bring to you from the Council Meeting is we as Lions will be concentrating on service to our fellow man. International President Tam is continuing to promote the Global Service Action Campaign started last year by PIP Scruggs. These campaigns are Engaging our Youths, Sharing the Vision, Relieving Hunger and Protecting our Environment. Dr. Tam is encouraging each Lions club to develop a service project for these four action campaigns. Your District Governor Team and District Chairpersons are ready to help your clubs to develop your program at the local and district level. An important part of our extension of service this year will be caring for the environment. President Tamʼs goal this year is to plant one million trees around the world. That's less than one tree for each member. If we can accomplish this goal, it proves once again that we can accomplish anything – just like we did when we extended our goal for Campaign Sight First II – just like we did when we prevented over 1 million cases of river blindness – just like we are going to do with helping eradicate measles. At the International Convention in Seattle I was asked to pledge the number of trees district 14 P would plant in 2010 – 2011. I pledged 500 TREES would be planted in Berks and Chester Counties. Lion Candy and I with 750 other District Governors from around the world planted a tree in Seattle. IPDG Nancy gave each attendee at club officer appreciation night a tree to plant to help start the District Project. We need to know how many trees were planted by you. Please e-mail me at peshober@verizon.net the number trees you planted this spring after Appreciation Night. The district will be planning a spring of 2012 planting project and I encourage the individual clubs to initiate their own planted project this fall of 2011 or spring of 2012. I believe working together we can double the number trees I pledged in Seattle to 1000 trees. I look forward to hearing from individual Lions and Clubs your thoughts and ideas to reach this goal. Passing of the Banner is Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Janelle Hall located in Bowers, PA. A buffet dinner will be served at 5 PM consisting of roast beef, baked chicken, baked ziti, parsley buttered potatoes, baked corn, green beans almandine, glazed carrots, fruit cup, tossed salad, rolls and butter, assorted homemade desserts and beverages. The hall holds 175 people and I'm hoping you will all help fill the seats to give final a gesture appreciation to Immediate Past District Governor Nancy for the great job she did in year 2010 – 2011. I look forward to seeing you all at the passing of the banner. Yours in Lionism DG Phil |
